Hoiho was named by Kororā and Tūī, which are year 5 and 6 classes at Te Kura Tuatahi o Te Koau Grant's Braes School in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

Hoiho is the te reo Māori (Māori language) name for the yellow-eyed penguin. The tamariki (children) chose this name as hoiho are endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand, and it is like having a part of Aotearoa in Antarctica.

Hoiho was deployed on the sea ice in Antarctica on 14 November 2023.
